Mavis Gary, a writer of teen literature, returns to her small hometown to relive her glory days and attempt to reclaim her happily married high school sweetheart. When returning home proves more difficult than she thought, Mavis forms an unusual bond with a former classmate who hasn’t quite gotten over high school either.
Academy Award winner Charlize Theron plays Mavis Gary, a writer of teen literature who returns to her small hometown to relive her glory days and attempt to reclaim her happily married high school sweetheart (Patrick Wilson). When returning home proves more difficult than she thought, Mavis forms an unusual bond with a former classmate (Patton Oswalt) who hasn’t quite gotten over high school, either.
A thirtysomething, divorced, young-adult fiction writer in Minneapolis returns to her hometown to chase the ex-boyfriend, who’s now married with a kid, that got away. Writing a spec script, she sent drafts to her friend and Juno director, Jason Reitman, for critique. When Labor Day, a film Reitman had been preparing had its production pushed to 2012, he had a window to direct Cody’s script, shot on a $12 million budget in 30 days.
After Charlize Theron and Patrick Wilson were cast, Patton Oswalt was signed after doing a table read-through of the script at Reitman’s house.
Patton said that because his character, Matt Freehauf, had been badly beaten as a teen and was required to walk with a brace, he consulted with both an acting coach and a physical therapist to prepare for the role: “I just wanted less and less to have to think about so I could be more present in the scenes with Charlize. She’s a really instinctual actor and I really didn’t want to be sitting there with eight other thoughts on my head while she’s just rolling with it.
” Let’s face it, no one is exactly young in Paramount Pictures’ Young Adult — one of them just acts like a snobby prom queen. That one in particular is Mavis Gary, a woman who returns to her small hometown (where she isn’t exactly remembered fondly) to reclaim her high school sweetheart. He, unfortunately, is married with children, but hey, why should that stop her from trying.
There are a enough funny clips from the trailer below that says the re-pairing of Jason Reitman and Diablo Cody (they worked Juno) may, and I use the word ‘may’ very liberally, be something special.
